About Your Mailchimp Store
A Mailchimp store helps you sell products directly from your website. It has all the tools you need to bring your business online and start making sales, including a storefront and payment processing powered by Stripe.
In this article, you'll learn how stores work in Mailchimp, and how you can use them to sell products online.
Things to know
- This feature requires Stripe to process payments. To help you get started, take a moment to learn how to Connect or Disconnect Stripe.
- When you create your store, we'll make a homepage for your website if you don't already have one in Mailchimp. We recommend that you design your website homepage before publishing your store for the first time.
- At this time, Mailchimp stores are available only to users with businesses based in the United States or the United Kingdom making domestic sales and shipments.
- Publishing a store or website on a custom domain requires a paid Websites & Commerce plan. To find out what features are included in each plan, check out our pricing page.
How it works
In Mailchimp, your online store is part of your website. It includes a product listing page that shows everything you have for sale, individual product detail pages for each item, a shopping cart, and a checkout process powered by your connection with Stripe.
If you don't have a website in Mailchimp yet, we'll make one for you while you set up your store. This includes a default home page with a navigation menu and placeholders for information about your brand and products.
After you publish your site, your store will appear as a link in your website's navigation and can be visited at a url under your website's domain. For example, if your website is published at example.mailchimpsites.com
, your store will be available at example.mailchimpsites.com/store
.
To add products to your store, you’ll create them in Mailchimp. These products live in your Mailchimp account, not Stripe or another service. You can add as many products as you want, and display or hide them as needed.
Shopping and checkout
When you create a store, we automatically add product pages and a checkout process to your website. A typical shopper will visit each of them as they choose products and complete a purchase.
- Product listing page
- Product detail page
- Shopping cart
- Checkout
- Order confirmation
Product listing page
The product listing page is the display window for your online store. Visitors can browse all of your visible products from here. If you have more than 12 products visible in your store, shoppers will see a button to Load More products. You can use our website editing tools to customize this page like any other part of your website.
Product detail page
When someone clicks on an item in your product listing page, this will take them to the item’s product detail page. This page offers a closer look at your product, and offers your customer to add one or more of them to their cart. Like the product listing page, you can customize this page with our website editing tools.
Shopping cart
If someone decides to buy a product, they can add it to their shopping cart, along with any other products in your store. A list of items in the cart will appear when they hover their cursor over the shopping cart icon.
Shoppers can click the shopping cart icon in your navigation menu or the View Cart button in the list view to remove items, change quantities, review their order summary, and begin checkout. While this page cannot be customized like other web pages, the header and footer of the page reflect your website and store's design and style.
Checkout
When customers check out, they’ll input their shipping address, shipping preference, and credit card number to finish their purchase. Stripe will process the payments made and report the totals in your Stripe account.
Note
At this time, a Mailchimp store can only make domestic sales and shipments. For businesses in the United States, this includes all 50 states and the District of Columbia. For business in the United Kingdom, this includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as the Highlands and Islands, Scilly Isles, and the Isle of Man.
Order and shipping confirmation
After a purchase is complete, your customer will see the order confirmation page, and we’ll send an order notification email to the e-mail address they provided at checkout. They'll also receive a final shipping notification email when you review your orders and mark their order as shipped.
Payment processing and fees
We partner with Stripe to process payments made in your store. To complete the set up of your store in Mailchimp, you'll need to connect Stripe to your Mailchimp account. Stripe fees can differ based on your business's location. To learn more about their services and pricing for your country, visit their website.
Mailchimp charges a fee based on the total amount billed to your customer. For example, if your customer buys a $10 product from you, chooses Standard shipping for $1, and the total taxes assessed are $2, the total transaction amount is $13. In this example, Mailchimp's transaction fee is 2% of that total, which in this example would be 26 cents.
Your transaction fee will depend on your Websites & Commerce plan.
Commerce Plan | Stores % Transaction Fee |
---|---|
Free | 2% |
Core | 1.5% |
Plus | 0.5% |
Order management
After you begin to make sales, you'll see a list of outstanding orders on your website dashboard. Each order includes the name of your customer, their order number, their billing address, and other important details needed to track and manage purchases.
When you've packed up an item and sent it in the mail, you’ll complete the order in Mailchimp to send your customer a shipping notification. You can come back to any completed order later to see what was ordered and how the payment was made.
Shipping
You can set flat rate shipping costs for all items in your store. Choose to offer the required Standard shipping only, or add Expedited or Rush options for faster service.
If you want to offer free shipping to your shoppers, you can set Standard shipping to 0.
Taxes
When a customer provides their shipping address during checkout, your store will automatically calculate the taxes that are due based on both your jurisdiction and the jurisdiction of that shopper. We work with Taxjar to automatically calculate taxes in the United States. For the United Kingdom, you can enable Valued Added Tax (VAT) collection. This will identify 20% of your product price as collected tax, and list your VAT number on your customer receipts.
Note
At this time, we do not offer options to exclude certain products from being assessed taxes, or to categorize certain types of products to determine reduced taxes or tax exemptions.
