Back for a second season, Tracy Clayton hosts Going Through It, a podcast featuring 14 notable Black women discussing a pivotal moment when they decided it was time to make a change.
Tracy: Hey y’all. It’s me, Tracy Clayton. I’ve talked to a lot of people over the years. You may have heard me host shows like Another Round or Strong Black Legends. And now, I’m bringing you season 2 of , Going Through it.
Tracy: So. Let me let you in on a little secret. We’ve been working on this new season for almost a year and we were going to put it out this fall. But due to….you can’t see but I'm generally gesturing to everything happening outside my window... it’s really clear we’re all going through it. Been going through it. So we decided: let’s put the show out now.
Tracy: I’ve been going through a lot over the last couple years: job changes, mental health revelations, you know….racism, sexism. Lots of things. So I thought, what if I could gather some of my FAVORITE, favorite, favorite black women - black women I look up to and get THEIR advice about how to pick myself up and get to JOY. We’re the Carmen San Diego’s of Black Joy? I don’t know. beat
Tracy: I got to talk to some phenomenal black women about the times when they pushed through moments of adversity, moments when people slammed doors in their faces, moments where the world told them that they couldn’t - and how they got through it.
Tracy: So that’s what I spent the last year doing - talking to black women to hear how THEYgot through it. Folks like Lena Waithe!
Lena: So many people want the crown so many people gunning for your throne because they like i want that it’s shiny i wanna sit up there. But no one can understand the things that come with it.
Tracy: Ilhan Omar
Ilhan: I had to develop a strong sense of me in order to survive and not lose my smile.
Tracy: Tika Sumpter
Tika: Black women are the spine of America, the spine of civilization. We have carried so much on our shoulders. So knowing what our Ancestors have done, I was like, “OK Tika let’s go.”
Tracy: I also go to talk to folks like Mara Brock Akil, Meagan Goode and SO many more. . I can’t wait for you to hear these conversations. Cuz girl, I have been going through it and I’m sure you have been going through so MAYBE we can … go through it...together.
Tracy: Going Through It, Season 2 - brought to you by Mailchimp - is coming to you July 14th on mailchimp.com/presents or wherever you get your podcasts - I’ll see you then.
