Common Segmentation Combinations

Mailchimp offers many segmentation options, so you can target the right contacts for your email. There are endless possibilities when it comes to creating segments in Mailchimp, but there are some commonly used combinations for certain segmenting tasks.

Automation activity

Account holders who use Automation can use Automation report data to segment subscribers. Say you use automations to educate. You could segment for subscribers who already completed one of your courses, and who are also interested in other course subjects.

In this example, we'll pull a segment of subscribers who have completed an automated course, and who are interested in a few of your other available groups.

1. Choose all from the Contacts match drop-down menu.
   
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Automation Activity | completed workflow | choose workflow.
3. Click Add.
   
4. For the second condition, set the drop-down menus to Group: XYZ | one of | hold CTRL or CMD and click to choose multiple options. In this example, since the subscriber has completed the course about dogs, we'll see if they're interested in learning more about either cats or iguanas.

Update Subscriber Profiles

To keep your audience fresh, you can ask your subscribers to update their profile information. Your most recent and more engaged subscribers may have already provided the data you want, so you don't necessarily need to send this type of campaign to them.

In this example, we'll pull a segment of subscribers who joined your audience more than six months ago, and who have a low contact rating of one or two.

1. Choose all from the Contacts match drop-down menu.
   
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Contact rating | is less than | 3 stars.
3. Click Add.
   
4. For the second condition, set the drop-down menus to Date added | is before | a specific date, and use the date picker to choose a date six months before today.
   

Remind subscribers about groups

You can target campaign content to subscribers who are interested in certain topics. But if you've added new groups to an audience, or you aren't reaching lower-rated subscribers, you could ask them to join some groups.

In this example, we'll pull a segment of subscribers who either have a low contact rating or who aren't listed in any group.

1. Choose any from the Contacts match drop-down menu.
   
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Group: XYZ | none of | hold CTRL or CMD and click to choose all options.
3. If you have multiple groups in your audience, click Add condition and repeat Step 2 until all of your groups and group options are added.
4. Click Add.
   
5. For the second condition, set the drop-down menus to Contact rating | is less than | 3 stars.
   

Segment by Email Domain

If you wanted to promote a product to students and faculty, you could segment your audience by subscribers with .edu email addresses. This could also be done with employees at a particular company, using their "company.com" domain.

In this example, we'll pull a segment of subscribers with mailchimp.com email addresses.

1. Choose all from the Contacts match drop-down menu.
   
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Email Address | ends with | type "mailchimp.com" in the field.
   

Campaign activity

Follow Up After Last Campaign

If you sent a campaign and didn't get the response you expected, you could send a follow-up campaign to the subscribers who didn't open the campaign.

In this example, we'll pull a segment of subscribers who received your last campaign but did not open it.

1. Choose all from the Subscribers match drop-down menu.
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Campaign Activity | was sent | choose your last campaign.
3. Click Add.
   
4. For the second condition, set the drop-down menus to Campaign Activity | did not open | choose the same campaign.

Related content for local residents

If you have subscribers all over the world, some of your messages may vary based on your subscribers' locations. Use a location condition with campaign activity to find subscribers who might be interested in similar content in a geographical area.

In this example, we'll pull a segment of subscribers who opened a specific, related campaign, and who live within 25 miles of a target area. We'll use New York, NY, as the example location.

1. Choose all from the Subscribers match drop-down menu.
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Campaign Activity | opened | choose campaign.
3. Click Add.
   
4. For the second condition, set the drop-down menus to Location | is within | 25 miles of | New York, NY, USA.
   
5. Click Validate Location to get an accurate point on the map.

E-commerce and web activity

Special Offers for VIPs

If you're using Mailchimp's VIP feature, you segment subscribers using that status. Mix the VIP status with purchase date, signup date, or other conditions to create a segment of VIPs with the behavior you're looking for.

In this example, we'll pull a segment of subscribers who are VIPs and who have spent a certain amount of money on products from a particular store.

1. Choose all from the Contacts match drop-down menu.
   
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to VIPs | is a member of.
3. Click Add.
   
4. For the second condition, set the drop-down menus to Store ordered from | is | choose store.
5. Click Add.
   
6. For the third condition, set the drop-down menus to Spent (Total) | more than | type dollar amount.
   

Re-engage former customers

Segments work with Mailchimp integrations, too. You can target customers based on their e-commerce data.

In this example, we'll pull a segment of contacts who made a purchase in the past, but haven’t bought anything recently.

1. Choose all from the Contacts match drop-down menu.
   
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Orders (Total #) | is | 1.
3. Click Add.
   
4. For the second condition, set the drop-down menus to Purchase Date | is before | a specific date, and choose your date.
   

Other ideas of using e-commerce data to build segments include:

• Online signups without purchase
  Combine Signup Source with Purchase Activity to find subscribers who signed up to your audience online but haven't purchased anything yet.
• Purchase type and amount
  You'll find a few purchase-related segmentation options, as well as several ways to filter for amount spent. For example, combine Category Purchased and Spent (Total) to find subscribers who have invested in certain types of products.

SurveyMonkey activity

Mailchimp's SurveyMonkey integration keeps track of some important data, like whether a subscriber has started or completed a particular survey. Combine campaign activity and SurveyMonkey activity to pinpoint subscribers who may have received a survey campaign and started it, but haven't finished.

In this example, we'll combine three conditions to pull a segment of subscribers who were sent a campaign with your SurveyMonkey link, started the survey, but have not completed it yet.

1. Choose all from Contacts match drop-down menu.
   
2. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Campaign Activity | was sent | choose SurveyMonkey campaign.
3. Click Add.
   
4. For the second condition, set the drop-down menus to SurveyMonkey activity | started survey | choose survey.
5. Click Add.
   
6. For the third condition, set the drop-down menus to SurveyMonkey activity | not completed survey | choose same survey.
